Is it a form of self expression or exploitation for monetary gains? Where do the line begins from an artist extending themselves to another medium and someone who created a product for a specific demographic? Back then you would of found an easy answer but today tech has created artist out of everyone. These days, people will screenshot peoples Instagram photos, blow it up, create an art exhibit and sell that exact photo for thousands..because art.
But with the marketing campaigns we see on a daily basis (especially on the streets of New York) can you tell when you’re seeing the next Banksy or a guriella marketing strategy to promote the next HBO series? How can you tell where our culture is going without mixing it up with commercial trends thats supposed to advertise/market a lifestyle?
I watched a video recently which pointed out advertising is like religion which purpose to keep a culture moving forward. If you watch the ads of the last several decades (I watch old ad compilations on youtube when Im procrastinating) you can see not much has changed in our society. Our culture hasn’t changed, it just got updated like the new Iphone 7. As an artist you have to find a way to express yourself while also paying your bills with that exact same art and show business is not about art. It’s a business! You think any of the big movie studios care about artistic vision? They got shareholders to report to. Whoever’s “art” is attracting our dollars is who they will finance. You got to create a product for a demographic because not everyone is going to buy your product but you’re an artist and you can’t compromise your art. You’re stuck between a rock and a hard place... but that’s a good place to be.
You don’t need a middle man with the internet. You post your art, hashtag and sell it. Social media is just another medium to showcase our art and reach the people who value it. Think of social media as a reality show and what you post is your reality. Your life is the canvas. Art is no longer just a painting or drawing. It can be a digital illustration, photo manipulations, a 5 second vine clip, art can be a statue of a naked presidential candidate, dancing practicing on the subway, to me anything can be art once you got it on camera and frame it a certain way.
It’s art when you view and present it different then how everyone can see it on their own with their own two eyes. Art change peoples consciousness . Art takes us to places we couldn’t go on our own. Art explains our inner most desires and feelings without us having to say a word. They say life intimates art, some say art imitates life. I say life is art and each of us are artists. Just depends on how you express and present it to the world.
